Abstract
L’objet de ce texte est d’examiner les politiques économiques adoptées respectivement par le Canada et les États-Unis suite au choc économique et financier qui a frappé l’ensemble de l’économie mondiale entre 2007 et 2009. Vus d’Europe, le Canada et les États-Unis sont souvent présentés comme deux pays dont les politiques se ressemblent. En effet, il s’agit dans les deux cas de fédérations relativement décentralisées, de tradition anglo-saxonne, où les partis clairement identifiés à la gauche n’ont jamais occupé une place importante, du moins au niveau fédéral, et dont les économies sont étroitement intégrées. Pourtant, les politiques adoptées pour répondre à ce choc présentent des différences notables entre ces deux pays. Dans l’ensemble, il apparaît que le modèle économique canadien, marqué entre autres par un certain conservatisme dans le domaine financier à l’échelle nationale et une plus grande flexibilité des politiques fiscales au niveau des unités fédérées, a permis à l’économie du Canada de mieux s’en tirer que celle des États-Unis.
