Die Versenkung des Passagierschiffes "Wilhelm Gustloff" (mit dem rechtlichen Status eines Kriegsschiffes) durch ein sowjetisches U-Boot vor der Küste Pommerns am 30. Januar 1945 zählt mit möglicherweise mehr als 9000 Opfern zu den größten Katastrophen in der Seefahrtsgeschichte. Die Erinnerung an das folgenschwere Unglück lebt im Osten weiter.
