Abstract
L’any 1973 un petit col·lectiu d’estudiosos dels Països Catalans es constituí en el Grup Català de Sociolingüística (GCS), amb el propòsit d’impulsar la normalització de la llengua catalana i els estudis sociolingüístics en la seva àrea. La seva primera aparició pública fou en el VIII CongrésMundial de Sociologia (Toronto, 1974), on, gràcies a L.V.Aracil—un dels promotors del GCS—, s’organitzà una sessió dedicada a la llengua catalana, i tot el seu material es publicà al primer número de l’anuari Treballs de Sociolingüística Catalana (1977). L’any 1981 el GCS tenia divuit associats. La creixença del col·lectiu el portà, el 2005, a denominar-se Associació de Sociolingüistes de Llengua Catalana (ASOLC) i, poc després, en convertir-se en filial de l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans, el 2008, adoptà el nom de Societat Catalana de Sociolingüística (SOCS). Al llarg de la seva història aquesta associació no solament s’ha dedicat a impulsar i estendre la recerca sociolingüística, sinó que, amés, ha participat en nombroses iniciatives de planificació lingüística.
