Bien que Weber n'ait guère utilisé le terme, la question de l'idéologie est au centre de son œuvre; mais alors qu'une tradition, peu fondée, réduit ses positions à un idéalisme inspiré d'un anti-marxisme obsessif, il est clair que les préoccupations de notre auteur sont ailleurs, au-delà d'un choix matérialiste ou spiritualiste du "facteur dominant". Une fois posé le principe selon lequel une idéologie peut, au même titre que n'importe quel autre "élément singulier" jouer, socialement, le rôle de cause ou celui de conséquence, Weber s'interroge essentiellement sur la nature d'une méthodologie susceptible de désidéologiser les "sciences de la réalité concrète"; la puissance de ses conceptions ne le conduit pourtant pas au delà d'un "jugement de possibilité objective". Le chercheur, comme l'agent social, marche davantage à la valeur qu'à la rationalité ; le reconnaître constitue un des facteurs essentiels du développement de notre discipline.
