Abstract This introductory chapter provides an overview of the impact of global climate change on non-human life on Earth. It then discusses the huge consequences of a warming climate, be it natural and/or driven by human action. They include melting of polar ice caps, thawing of permafrost, a rise in sea level, shifting ocean currents, ocean acidification, altered weather patterns over continents (especially precipitation patterns), changes in the distribution of arable land, and changes in the habitats available for many plant and animal species including man.
