Abstract A summary of the Alicante meeting, entitled The Be Phenomenon in Early Type Stars, is presented here. The emphasis at this meeting was on Be stars, but possible connections to other types of stars were also considered. Some suggestions for the directions of future approaches are provided. The meeting was dedicated to the late Mercedes Jaschek, Carlos Jaschek, and Arne Slettebak, all of whom made significant contributions to our current understanding of Be stars.
