Abstract
In 1906 Russia began its experiment in constitutionalism. The First State Duma sat for only 72 days but it broughtforth an extensive monograph and pamphlet literature. This article is the first to examine this source base. It illustrates the main forms of analysis, and in particular a mix ofpolemics and domestic political science in embryo. There was a robust defence of the representative institution that despite an early closure remained a feature of Russian politics to the Tsar’s fall.
