Abstract
In this article on Canadian popular culture the author recounts the questions prompted by the research for his book, Mondo Canuck (co-authored with Greig Dymond), as well as the questions raised by the success of the published book in 1996. The discussion limits Canadian popular culture to culture that provides amusement, is available to all and is consumed by the masses. Pierre Elliot Trudeau is seen as a figure who conforms to these criteria and thus is the subject of an entire chapter in the book. This article links the popularity of Mondo Canuck with the outpouring of emotion for Trudeau's death; in both cases we are mourning distinctly Canadian culture that is disappearing. Reading the book and thinking about Trudeau make us nostalgic for a "cool" Canada that is fading in order to be replaced in the global market by a consumer brand of nationalism.
