La Revue d'Histoire ecclesiastique est le fruit d'idees nouvelles concernant la tâche de l'universite et de l'education superieure, d'une nouvelle interpretation de l'effort de l'erudition qui se developpait aussi en histoire, et d'un point de vue nouveau sur la relation entre foi et science. C'est ce contexte conceptuel changeant qui est au centre de cet article qui maintient l'attention sur la facon dont les idees nouvelles menaient a la creation de nouvelles revues ou a la transformation de revues deja existantes. Il esquisse aussi un «paysage de periodiques» dans lequel la Revue est apparue.
