Abstract
Door de Canarische veroveringen apart te beschouwen, en niet als tussenstop in de verovering van Amerika, wordt in deze scriptie het gesimplificeerde beeld dat geschetst wordt in tal van algemene werken over de vroegmoderne koloniale geschiedenis van Spanje, genuanceerd. Daarnaast geeft de scriptie inzicht in het ingewikkelde en snelveranderende karakter van het Spaans Imperialisme met betrekking tot de Canarische Eilanden, door de volgende vraag te beantwoorden:\nWaarom hebben de Spanjaarden de Canarische Eilanden veroverd en hoe is het belang \tvan de eilanden veranderd door de ontdekking van Columbus in 1492?
