Paru en 1983, le recueil de poèmes Sudbury de l’écrivain Patrice Desbiens rend compte de la précarité dans laquelle s’écrit encore la poésie franco-ontarienne dans les années 1980, même si une dizaine d’années se sont écoulées depuis la naissance de la maison d’édition Prise de parole, fondée en 1973 dans l’espoir d’accorder une certaine visibilité aux littératures francophones du Canada et, plus particulièrement, de l’Ontario. Dans Sudbury, Desbiens manifeste une conscience aiguë de l’exiguïté de la communauté franco-ontarienne et met en scène ce que l’on pourrait appeler une poétique de la parole piégée, au sens où la parole du poète, soit celui qui dit je dans le recueil, apparaît contrainte à un infini mouvement circulaire qui oscille entre la négation et l’affirmation de la condition minoritaire en Ontario français.
