In the development of PTSD after trauma, individual variability or unique, individual pathways mark the course of the disorder. Moreover, multicausal mechanisms contribute to its outcome. Comprehensive assessments that consider the scientific literature and that analyze the scientifically gathered data are the best ways to ensure that evidence offered to the court meets standards for the validity and reliability of evidence. There are gaps in our knowledge of PTSD, especially in terms of long-term functional and psychological outcome. Nevertheless, bridges can be made from the literature to the individual, as long as the multicausal nature of PTSD is recognized.
