Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder that currently affects 4 million people in the United States alone. It is a progressively debilitating condition that, in its later stages, often leaves victims without the cognitive abilities to care for themselves. The estimated direct and indirect costs of diagnosis, treatment, and long-term institutional care for AD patients is currently estimated to be in excess of $100 billion annually (1). The emotional and social impact of the disease is immeasurable. With advances in general healthcare contributing to greater longevity, 8 million Americans are expected to develop AD by the first quarter of the 21st century unless parallel advances are made in the treatment of AD to alter the devastating course of this disease.
