Notre propos ici sera d’éclairer le rapport institutionnel entre la rhétorique comme pratique sophistiquée et l’enseignement, en privilégiant trois focales sur le temps long : l’ancienne rhétorique à son apogée (xvie-xixe siècles), autrement dit, la pédagogie rhétorique avant l’avènement de la littérature ; la méthodologie rhétorique dans la pédagogie au xxe siècle, quand elle offre des procédures raffinées à l’enseignement de la littérature ; enfin, l’avènement en France au xxie siècle de ce nouvel exercice qu’est le grand oral du baccalauréat et qui signe l’invention d’un genus dicendi éminemment complexe.
