Abstract
In 1702, the Boston Puritan minister Cotton Mather published his Magnalia Christi Americana in seven folio volumes. The purpose of this monumental religious history was to record the "Remarkables of Divine Providence" that had illuminated the experience of the first generation of New England Congregationalists. With this generation already dying out, Mather was fearful that the fervour of their successors was growing cold.1 One of the Calvinist preachers whose piety and orthodoxy he celebrated in Book 3 of the Magnalia was the Reverend Thomas Thatcher (1620-1678), famous for instructing the deaf and for converting Quakers. But Mather also drew attention to Thatcher's "accomplishments" as "an excellent physician."
