Le premier récit de voyage de Marie de Ujfalvy-Bourdon, De Paris à Samarkand : le Ferghanah, le Kouldja et la Sibérie occidentale. Impressions de voyage d’une Parisienne (1880) fait l’objet d’une stratégie éditoriale permettant à l’auteure de se raconter comme écrivaine-exploratrice, aux côtés de son mari, Charles-Eugène de Ujfalvy, l’homme de science. À travers l’étude des scènes de mesure anthropométrique réalisées lors de leur mission scientifique en Asie centrale (1876-77), je mettrai en évidence la dimension hybride, à la fois savante et pittoresque, de ces descriptions de l’altérité. D’une part, la terminologie scientifique diffuse et soutient les théories anthropologiques de son mari, d’autre part, sur un ton pittoresque, l’auteure enrichit les données ethnographiques d’une dimension narrative nouvelle. Cette tonalité singulière permet à l’auteure de négocier avec des contraintes de production et de réception du récit de voyage féminin au dix-neuvième siècle.
