Multimodality imaging of parotid gland oncocytoma: a pictorial review

Abstract
Parotid gland tumors include a wide range of entities, ranging from benign lesions such as pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin’s tumor, to aggressive malignant lesions such as carcinoma and lymphomas. Oncocytoma (OC) is a rare benign salivary gland tumor characterized by slow growth over years. It almost exclusively occurs within the parotid gland of elderly, accounting for about 1% of all salivary gland neoplasms. Distinguishing OC from other benign lesions and sometime from malignant lesions can be difficult. This pictorial review examines 8 cases of salivary gland lesions from our institute, including 5 histologically verified oncocytic lesions. We will discuss specifically the MRI and ultrasound appearance of OC regarding diagnostic clues as well as differential diagnoses.
