Als Sir Richard Branson am 11. Juli 2021 mit der VSS Unity von Virgin Galactic und am 20. Juli 2021 Jeff Bezos mit der New Shepard von Blue Origin erfolgreiche suborbitale Raumflüge absolvierten, liefen die Kommentarspalten der Medien heiß. Es war von „Milliardärsspielzeug“ und „galaktischen Größenwahn“ die Rede. Tatsächlich löste die Inszenierung dieser ersten kommerziellen Suborbitalflüge Abwehrreflexe aus, denn sie erscheinen als nur „Superreichen“ zugängliche elitäre und nutzlose Ressourcenverschwendung. Wagt man aber einen weiteren Blick, sieht die Sache ganz anders aus.
