Jeune discipline dont le terme apparaît pour la première fois dans la littérature scientifique en 1950 dans un ouvrage de Jaap Kunst, l’ethnomusicologie est d’abord l’étude et l’archivage des musiques de tradition orale. Elle se distingue de la musicologie par son approche ethnographique de terrain ainsi que par l’analyse de la musique par l’entremise du contexte social de la culture qui la produit et l’écoute. Plusieurs courants en diversifieront les pratiques méthodologiques et les modèles d’analyse.
