La littérature de l’exil a en général un contexte sociopolitique et culturel réel en toile de fond. Le roman Travelers (2019) du Nigérian Helon Habila n’est pas une exception, mais, en dehors des échos avec la crise des migrants en Europe de 2019, sa construction narrative est elle-même à l’image de l’exil et de la migration. Ainsi, nous tâcherons d’analyser dans cet article la manière dont l’expérience de l’exil façonne et reconfigure le récit.
 Tout d’abord, nous aborderons les points de départ narratifs faisant écho aux voyages et aux parcours des personnages. Le récit de l’exil apparaît ici comme l’archive mémorielle du passé des migrants, passé qui est leur seule certitude et qui explique le désir de stabilité. Néanmoins, dans un deuxième temps, toutes les histoires enchâssées du récit-matrice traversent plusieurs étapes dont le cheminement s’apparente souvent à une forme de « déterritorialisation » selon le terme de Deleuze et Guattari. Ce monde sans repères habité par les migrants mène inévitablement à l’égarement. Des lieux comme le camp de réfugiés ou encore la mer ont ainsi un rôle de dés-ancrage illustré à travers la structure achronique et le changement de focale des personnages. Enfin, l’article analysera les mises en scène des lieux d’arrivée qui s’apparentent plutôt à des nouveaux départs qui refusent l’immobilisme. Ainsi, à travers une construction narrative en spirale, cet article se propose d’analyser le roman de Habila comme un récit-voyage à l’image des expériences migratoires.
