Este estudio, que se centra en la problemática de la educación para la ciudadanía, se basa en un documento oficial del Ministerio de Educación portugués, con el título Estrategia Nacional de Educación para la Ciudadanía. La pregunta central de la investigación de este estudio era la siguiente: ¿Cómo podemos educar para la ciudadanía mediante la literatura infantil? Sus objetivos se centraban en conocer y comprender las concepciones de los niños sobre racismo, multiculturalidad y migración, de modo que se ampliaran sus conocimientos sobre estos temas y se pudiera reflexionar con los niños a partir de la práctica para promover la ciudadanía mediante la literatura infantil. El centro de la metodología consistió en una aproximación a la investigación-acción, en consonancia con la reflexión sobre la propia práctica docente. Como instrumentos de recolección de datos se ha usado la entrevista semiestructurada, la observación participante y las notas de campo, además de registros fotográficos y registros audiovisuales. Los participantes en el estudio han sido niños de una clase de tercero de primaria, de un colegio público y urbano. Los resultados han mostrado un mejor conocimiento y comprensión de los fenómenos en estudio, por parte de los niños, tras la intervención con las obras de literatura infantil. La mayoría de los niños fueron capaces no solo de entender los conceptos de racismo, multiculturalidad y migración, sino también de adoptar una posición crítica sobre estos.
