Abstract
Alors que, dans les deux camps, les martyrs étaient nombreux dans l’Algérie soumise aux convulsions de la violence aveugle, Christian de Chergé réfléchit à la réalité du martyre. Non pas que cette réalité le fascine et l’attire, mais pour approfondir le choix qu’ont fait les moines de demeurer en Algérie, malgré ce climat de terreur qui les cernait. La notion de « martyre de l’amour » qui décrit le don de la vie au quotidien, dans le coude à coude et le goutte-à-goutte, finit par s’imposer. Le martyr, c’est celui qui donne sa vie à travers ce qui est le plus ordinaire, tout au long de ses jours. C’est celui qui consent à vivre sa Pâques, assumant la dimension eschatologique de sa propre existence.
