Après une brève évocation des multiples raisons pour lesquelles l’œuvre d’Isabelle de Charrière requiert un cadre émancipé des littératures «nationales» afin d’être analysée, cet article porte sur le motif du ciel tel qu’elle le mobilise dans son roman Trois femmes. Consacré ostensiblement à la manière dont se décline le principe du devoir entre l’abstraction céleste illustrée en frontispice et ses déclinaisons pratiques par des personnages ordinaires, Trois femmes est un roman d’émigration atypique: progressiste, égalitaire et optimiste, fût-ce sur le très long terme.
