Abstract
Sikhism was founded with the words, practices, and institutions initiated by Nanak (1469–1539), who is revered as the first of ten human‐embodied Gurus of the tradition, before Guruship came to be invested in the sacred scripture that stands at the center of the community, the Guru Granth Sahib. The community is believed today to be comprised of approximately 27 million adherents, the great majority of them living in the Indian state of Punjab, the locus of the historical development of the community. The Sikh Diaspora, however, is large and influential, with significant communities in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Singapore. The tradition reflects its early modern origins as well as its ongoing modern transformations, and is notable for its prominence both within Indian society and in many diasporic locations.
