Abstract
Bertrand Russell (1872–1970) was a notorious critic of religion in the early half of the twentieth century. He took Western religion to task on several fronts – even on its most basic notions of God and eternal souls. He aimed to expose religion not only as a source of fiction, but also as an institute of harm. Religion prompted a dangerous mindset, Russell contended, of forming belief without justification. And it was a cunning source of oppression – in its misplaced moral taboos and its mistrust of nonbelievers. Beneath his contempt of organized sects, however, Russell still admired certain values religion at least touted to have – in the general good and in universal love. And he saw great merit in preserving a religious sentiment, only stripped of all doctrine, dogma, and superstition.
