Abstract
Le présent article, fondé sur l'examen des dossiers de patients de plusieurs asiles français dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, étudie les conflits intrafamiliaux suscités par les internements à l'asile. Loin de constituer un bloc uni, les proches ont quelquefois des intérêts et des avis divergents quant à la conduite à tenir vis-à-vis de l'internée ou l'interné. Si les conflits peuvent se cristalliser autour d'enjeux financiers, ils mettent aussi en jeu des lectures profanes de la maladie et des « théories diagnostiques » opposées. En arbitrant ces conflits, les médecins aliénistes participent à la construction des normes familiales et des frontières de la famille légitime au XIXe siècle.
