Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care was launched in 1998. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The fields of clinical nutrition and metabolic care are divided into 15 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Claude PichardClaude PichardInitially specialized in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Claude Pichard studied the field of clinical nutrition with the group of Prof. K.N. Jeejeebhoy in Toronto, Canada. Returning to Europe, he became Professor of Nutrition and created the Division of Clinical Nutrition at the Geneva University Hospital, Switzerland. Besides his clinical activities, he is currently teaching at the Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences, and at the School of Dietetics at the Geneva University, Switzerland. He received a number of research prizes and honorific lectures including the ESPEN Arved Wretlind lecture. His group of research is involved in a number of subjects and he has published over 500 papers (>325 referenced in Pubmed), presented over 510 lectures at national and international meetings. One of his latest research interests is the development of a revolutionary indirect calorimeter to increase the accuracy and the ease-of-use for the measurement of energy expenditure in healthy subjects, and patients with or without mechanical ventilation. He is active in 11 academic societies in and outside Europe, is the Founder (2005) and Past-Chairman of the European Nutrition for Health Alliance. He was also the President, then the Chairman of the European Society of Clinical Nutrition & Metabolism (ESPEN) until 2006, and the Director of the ESPEN Life-Long Learning educational programme until 2012. In the Web of Science, Prof. Pichard (h-index = 55) has had 338 publications and has been cited over 11,800 times. Mariëlle P.K.J. EngelenMariëlle P.K.J. EngelenDr Marië̈lle P.K.J. Engelen, PhD, is Professor and Chancellor EDGES Fellow at Texas A&M University, College Station, USA. She currently serves as Co-Director and Head of Clinical Research for the Center for Translational Research in Aging and Longevity (CTRAL) at the Department of Health and Kinesiology. She received her MSc in Health Sciences (Movement Sciences) at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. After her postdoctoral fellowships at the Depts of Respiratory Medicine and Surgery in Maastricht, she became Assistant and subsequently Associate Professor at the Dept. of Geriatrics, University Arkansas for Medical Sciences, USA, and Arkansas Children's Hospital, USAm before moving to Texas A&M University in 2012. For over 25 years, she has conducted research in the field of clinical nutrition and metabolism in relation to functional performance during aging and in chronic (wasting) diseases (i.e., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer, cystic fibrosis, chronic heart failure). Her research focuses on the (protein and amino acid) metabolic alterations underlying muscle wasting and dysfunction of the muscle, gut, and brain in chronic diseases involving the use of stable isotope methodologies. As such, she has conducted many acute mechanistic studies as well as nutritional intervention and exercise rehabilitation studies to restore metabolism, muscle mass, and physical and cognitive performance in these conditions. She has obtained several federal research grants (including NIH and DOD) and awards for her work, and has authored over 100 original research publications (H index: 40) and four patents. She is Associate Editor for Clinical Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition-ESPEN, and Section Editor of the Translational Research in Wasting Disease section in Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism. Berthold KoletzkoBerthold KoletzkoDr Berthold Koletzko is the Professor of Paediatrics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, Germany, and heads the Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine division at Dr von Hauner Children's Hospital, University of Munich Medical Center, Germany. Dr Koletzko has authored more than 980 journal articles (times cited: 21,918, H-index 75), 222 book chapters, and 39 books/monographies. His research has been funded by the EU Framework Programmes 5, 6, 7 and H2020, European Research Council, German Research Council, German Federal Ministry Education and Research, governments of Bavaria and Norway, US National Institutes of Health and other public funding bodies. He has coordinated the EU funded projects CHOP, PIANO, EARNEST, and EarlyNutrition and the EU Erasmus+ Projects Early Nutrition eAcademy South East Asia and Capacity Building to Improve Early Nutrition and Health in South Africa. He is a member of the grant review board medicine, German Research Council and chairs their Clinical Trial grant review board. Dr Koletzko is the Editor-in-Chief of Annuals of Nutrition and Metabolism and of World Review of Nutrition and Dietetics, and Associate Editor of Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care and Monatsschrift Kinderheilkunde. He serves as the President of Federation of International Societies of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, Immediate Past-President of The European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition, President-Elect of the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation and Elected Treasurer of the United European Gastroenterology and Strategic Nutrition Advisor at the International Paediatric Association. He has acted as Scientific Advisor to the German Federal Government, the Innovation Initiative of the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the World Health Organisation, and other national and international governmental bodies and organisations. Raanan ShamirRaanan ShamirRaanan Shamir is Professor of Paediatrics and the Lea and Arieh Pickel Chair for Paediatric Research at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel, and Chairman of the Institute of Gastroenterology, Nutrition and Liver Diseases at Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel. Raanan Shamir received his MD degree at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, and was trained in paediatrics at Beilinson Medical Center in Petach Tiqva, Israel. In the early 90 s, he was a fellow at the Division of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, USA, and came back to Israel to serve as the Head of the Department of Nutrition at the Israel Ministry of Health. Following this, he held the position of Head of the Gastroenterology and Nutrition Unit at Meyer Children's Hospital in Haifa, Israel. Prof. Shamir has published about 450 original papers, reviews and comments, book chapters and guidelines (times cited 27,205; H index:73, December 31, 2020). His research has been supported by prestigious funds such as the European Community Framework Funds and the Israel Science Foundation. His current research areas include paediatric nutrition, nutrition and growth, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease and childhood hyperlipidemia. Prof. Shamir serves as the ESPGHAN Chair of the publication committee of JPGN (Journal of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition), an Editor for the Paediatric Section of Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care and was the Senior Associate Editor (2010–2013) and Acting Editor in Chief (2013–2014) of JPGN. He serves as a reviewer for journals in the field of paediatrics, nutrition, gastroenterology and atherosclerosis.
