Abstract
Abstract The social gospel was a diverse, loosely connected movement emphasizing the direct application of Christian principles to social problems. It arose in the late 19th century, peaked before World War I, was echoed by the New Deal and the civil rights movement, and continues to impact contemporary groups. Although centered in Protestantism in the United States, the social gospel was also part of the reforming spirit of its era and influential in Canada and Great Britain and among Roman Catholics. Much of the movement was a response to the immediate challenges of industrialization, but its advocates also displayed a sincere piety and a commitment to usher in the Kingdom of God through working for social progress.
