198 PHOENIX In this regard, it seems bizarre that he utilizes only the first of the four volumes by M. Ponsich of field survey in the Guadalquivir valley.2 In his enthusiasm for his subject, Lowe provides lists of hundreds of Baetican oil amphora stamps (129–139) which will prove tiresome except to experts, who can presumably get the same information from other sources. There is little coverage on the late empire: Lowe notes the decline of mining and oil production in the third century (164–165) and makes reference to late imperial fish factories (152). Who were the owners of the oil and wine producing estates? In the 1960s, A. J. N. Wilson painted an exaggerated picture of massive emigration from Italy to Spain, for which he was chastized by other scholars, while M. H. Callender tried, by a leap of faith, to link the abbreviated names on amphora stamps to coincidentally similar ones in Roman inscriptions from Iberia.3 In his sections on Italian immigrants, Lowe sounds reminiscent of Wilson (whom he does not cite), nor does he entirely avoid the sorts of temptation to which Callender fell prey. It is problematic, for instance, to compare the amphora stamp m.p.m in Cataluña with the Lusitanian duovir Q. Petronius Maternus or the Baetican duovir L. Porcius Maternus (123) as if they could somehow be related. Since members of the same family often had different praenomina and cognomina from each other, the most valid basis for comparison is the middle name or initial, which in this case could just as plausibly stand for Pompeius, i.e., a descendant of one of Pompey’s many clients in Spain, or Pedanius, a nomen borne by several members of the elite of Barcino. On 134 Lowe suggests, and on 138 states as a fact, that the Baetican oil amphora stamp port.pah—port(us) meaning “warehouse”—refers to Hadrian’s father, P. Aelius Hadrianus. Yet many Latin nomina begin with A, and the H could as readily be Hilarus, Hiberus, Hispanus, or Hybrida. This is a painstaking work of scholarship, though so detailed in places that the casual reader will find it hard sledding. For those enamoured of material evidence for the Roman economy, Lowe has done a creditable job of collecting and arranging large amounts of information from scattered publications. No other book documents the archaeology of the Romano-Iberian economy in such depth. However, while I admire Lowe’s enterprise in assembling so much disparate evidence, I find that his static rehearsal of masses of data, culminating in obvious or speculative conclusions, is far less effective than the more dynamic approach of E. Haley, Baetica Felix (Austin 2003). Lowe’s numerous photographs are clear and illuminate his discussion. There is a glossary of Latin terms (including, unfortunately, dua [sic] nomina) and an index of sites, but no subject index. University of Waterloo Leonard A.
