In Lexical Phonology and Morphology (LPM) within linguistic theory, stratal separation is used to account for behavior shared by only a subset of the elements of the lexicon within a language. Due to the ordering of strata, linguists are able to apply phonological rules to the result of combining two groups of morphemes without including other nonparticipating groups of morphemes. This chapter examines level ordering and word structure in the Nuuchahnulth, a language of Vancouver Island, Canada. In particular, it considers various phenomena that demonstrate the need to separate morphemes into strata in the grammar. The chapter also discusses a number of cases where there seem to be distinct differences in the application of rules when it comes to Nuuchahnulth grammar, including glottalization effects, delabialization, deletion, stress assignment, bound root/free form distinctions, and suffix combining forms.
