Au cœur de la recherche depuis les débuts de l’archéologie préhistorique, le Sud-Ouest de la France a livré d’importantes séquences stratigraphiques qui permettent de discuter de l’évolution des associations fauniques tout au long du Paléolithique moyen. Les sites Paléolithiques de cette région, qui s’étend des Charentes aux Pyrénées en passant par le Périgord et le Quercy, ont joué un rôle-clé dans les débats sur les capacités d’exploitation de l’environnement par les Néandertaliens, notamment en ce qui a trait à la chasse aux grands herbivores (cheval, bison, etc.) et les mécanismes de compétition avec les carnivores. Ces dernières décennies, la reprise critiques des séquences, la multiplication d’études taphonomiques détaillées combinées à de nouvelles approches en archéozoologie ont permis de renouveler notre compréhension des comportements de subsistance en soulignant la diversité des stratégies développées par les sociétés néandertaliennes.
