Abstract
Abstract Societies of the ancient world used interest rates on a wide variety of loans to finance expenses ranging from the personal through to maritime commerce. We see this most clearly in ancient Greece and Rome, but while this concept seems familiar to us, interest rates were established in very different ways; these rates did, however, affect the ancient economies in which they were used, sometimes dramatically.
