De nombreuses activités quotidiennes des personnes âgées nécessitent des déplacements. Or, les difficultés liées à la mobilité ont tendance à croître avec l’âge et les personnes aînées sont souvent confrontées à des environnements inhospitaliers. Dans cet article, nous explorons les tactiques déployées par les personnes âgées pour maintenir leur mobilité quotidienne hors domicile, ou encore pour ajuster leurs activités quand leurs déplacements deviennent trop difficiles. La recherche porte sur 21 personnes de 70 ans et plus d’un arrondissement central montréalais qui se déplacent, mais avec certaines difficultés. Des entrevues ont été réalisées pour connaître leurs expériences de mobilité. Les résultats montrent qu’elles déploient des tactiques pour contourner les difficultés et que les obstacles de l’environnement urbain freinent leur mobilité, les obligeant à modifier, voire abandonner, certaines activités. La recherche montre l’importance de répondre collectivement aux besoins des aînés, notamment en les intégrant dans la planification de l’aménagement de l’espace et des transports.
