Abstract
Publié en 1969, l’essai de Gérard Blanchard La Bande dessinée. Histoire des histoires en images de la préhistoire à nos jours assignait au « neuvième art » la lointaine origine de l’art rupestre. Cette hypothèse avait pour conséquence de dissoudre la spécificité d’un média moderne dans une tradition plurimillénaire, celle des « histoires en images » de toutes natures et sur tous supports. Près d’un demi-siècle plus tard, la question de la naissance de la bande dessinée demeure controversée. La référence aux concepts de « narration » ou de « séquence » ne permet pas de trancher la question, mais les gestes accomplis au XIX e siècle par Rodolphe Töpffer ont une dimension inaugurale qui ne peut être niée.
