Abstract
After case totals of Haemophilus influenzae type b reached a historic low of four in 2000, the total ballooned to 16 cases in 2001, the largest number since 1995. The situation was somewhat better in 2002, with 10 cases recorded. Reasons for the 26 cases during 2001 to 2002 included parent refusal of immunization in seven instances (27%). Six of these children had severe illnesses, with meningitis (4) or epiglottitis (2). One child had complications of meningitis that included bilateral hearing loss, hemiparesis and developmental delay. Among the 26 total cases, two died of Haemophilus influenzae type b infection. Ten cases occurred among children too young to have completed the primary immunization series. Only three apparently normal children developed infection despite three to four previous doses of Pentacel vaccine (Aventis Pasteur Limited, Canada) (2001 – one instance, 2002 –two instances), an experience similar to previous years, including 2000. Vaccine effectiveness remains high, with no apparent effect of concurrent administration of other vaccines.
