Abstract
Significance For a quarter of a century, tensions between national governments in North Africa (notably between Morocco and Algeria, over the Western Sahara conflict) have obstructed regional integration and limited opportunities for in-person interaction between citizens of different countries. Nonetheless, most still favour greater regional unity. Moreover, the internet is increasingly opening up spaces for contact and engagement across Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, particularly as online activism has expanded across the region since 2011. Impacts The perceived progress of Tunisia's revolution and ongoing Algerian protests will affect Moroccans' propensity to agitate for change. Authoritarian governments in Rabat and Algiers will struggle to contain rising expression of dissent online. Popular pressure to reopen the Algerian-Moroccan border at Oujda may increase.
