Abstract
Abstract King Midas of Phrygia ruled from Gordion in central Turkey in the late eighth centurybce. Near eastern records provide information on his military and diplomatic activity. Phrygian texts attest to Midas but in some cases the name was likely reused by his successors. Greek and Roman sources created mythical stories about Midas as a wealthy eastern king. The most famous story is Midas’ golden touch which he gained from Dionysos, turned from a gift to a curse, ending with Midas bathing in the Pactolus River, which was rich in gold.
