Abstract
The development of modern echocardiographic systems has drastically altered pediatric cardiology practice. Children no longer require catheterization to establish the diagnosis prior to treatment. In fact, many children with congenital heart disease undergo corrective surgery based solely upon echocardiographic diagnosis. It has now become the standard diagnostic tool, and a required skill for all pediatric cardiologists. This chapter provides an overview of echocardiography, including physical principles, strategies of anatomic and physiologic examination, limitations of the technique, and a description of some newer technologies. Specific echocardiographic findings of the major congenital lesions are included in the relevant sections.
