Abstract
Psychosocial development in adults requires a broad view of the patterns of gains and losses across adulthood. It typically has been described from one of two general perspectives. One highlights a focus on discrete stages involving qualitative changes with age, whereas the other focuses on general mechanisms that explain gradual changes across adulthood. Both of these approaches may be useful and this entry concentrates on a description of these models with regard to three major contexts or roles in psychosocial development in adulthood: couple and family relationships, work and vocation, and civic engagement.
