Abstract
Les analyses conjointes des restes de plantes et d’insectes en contexte archéologique permettent d’aborder de nombreuses problématiques dont l’alimentation. Dans les régions arctiques, le rôle des plantes dans le régime alimentaire des sociétés Inuit anciennes a longtemps été sous-estimé dans les études archéologiques. Pourtant, les études récentes, associées à des données ethnobotaniques, démontrent que certaines plantes, telles que les baies et les fruits d’espèces ligneuses, prenaient une part essentielle dans l’alimentation des ancêtres des Inuits actuels. Nous présentons ici les résultats de nos analyses conjointes archéobotaniques et archéoentomologiques au sein de la maison F-21, datée du xive siècle de notre ère, sur le site Rising Whale (KTZ-304) au cap Espenberg, dans le nord-ouest de l’Alaska. La présence de plantes consommées historiquement chez les Iñupiat en association avec des insectes détritivores nous a permis de caractériser les espaces dédiés à l’alimentation dans l’habitat ainsi que de préciser la place des plantes dans le régime thuléen.
