Abstract
Cet article ne s’adresse pas aux spécialistes en art et encore moins à ceux de l’art contemporain amérindien puisqu’il postule que ces derniers ne sont que peu nombreux. Comme son titre l’annonce, ce sont les différents modes de réception qui sont abordés. Découpés en trois zones géographiques et linguistiques, une différenciation est faite entre le monde anglophone (sous-entendu principalement nord-américain, y compris le Québec anglophone), la France et le Québec francophone. Trois postulats sont discutés, se rapportant à ces trois zones, dans l’ordre : la ghettoïsation, la fascination et l’ignorance. Une tentative de définir l’art contemporain amérindien est faite d’entrée de jeu, mais c’est sur les stéréotypes rattachés au mot « indien » qu’un regard plus détaillé est posé. Le refus d’aborder le travail des artistes d’un point de vue plus théorique et analytique s’accorde avec ce qui découle des trois postulats : la situation de l’art contemporain amérindien ne lui permet pas d’être regardée conformément aux travaux des artistes car le monde (de l’art) occidental, lui, n’a pas encore dépassé un certain nombre de stéréotypes.
