Abstract
Si le traitement de la réalité amérindienne par les historiens canadiensfrançais du XIXe siècle est aujourd’hui bien connu, il en va tout autrement en ce qui concerne le portrait des Amérindiens qui a pu être véhiculé dans la littérature plus large, produite par l’ensemble de la classe intellectuelle du Canada français de l’époque. En ce sens, on peut se demander si cette littérature était nécessairement porteuse des mêmes perceptions et représentations des Amérindiens que celle à proprement parler « historique ». En s’appuyant sur une analyse sommaire d’un corpus littéraire représentatif, cet article cherche à démontrer que la classe intellectuelle canadienne française de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, à l’instar des historiens mais par des voies parfois différentes, proposait une image bien précise des Amérindiens, mais une image qui découlait davantage de préoccupations identitaires et qui, somme toute, avait peu d’ancrage dans la réalité.
