Dans L’Être et le Néant, la section IV du chapitre III de la deuxième partie offre une surprise : alors que dans l’ensemble du chapitre, la constitution des catégories de la transcendance obéit à un schéma simple dans lequel à une relation venue du pour-soi et qui en conserve le caractère ek-statique ou la néantisation interne, l’en-soi « répond » par l’indifférence, décomposant toutes les néantisations en négatités (ou en négations externes), la constitution de la catégorie selon laquelle il peut y avoir pour les étants intra-mondains une apparition et une disparition, voire une mobilité, échappe (au moins dans une des phases de la constitution) à un tel schéma, donnant l’impression qu’il peut y avoir, dans l’en-soi lui-même (mais, il est vrai, selon le dévoilement en « il y a » par le pour-soi), une sorte de proto-néantisation, qui ne soit pourtant pas le surgissement du pour-soi. Cet article se borne à décrire la démarche suivie dans ce passage et à en montrer le caractère singulier.
