Abstract
Cet article montre que l’écrivain voyageur Ibn Battuta (1304-1377), très étudié dans les sciences sociales depuis les années 1980, demeure peu lu par la critique occidentale spécialisée en littérature de voyage. Après l’exposé des raisons d’une telle absence, l’analyse se tourne vers des interprétations littéraires et idéologiques qui pourraient être utiles à la critique en littérature viatique afin qu’elle se décide à inclure les voyageurs arabes dans son corpus : la catégorie du « merveilleux factuel », la multiplicité auctoriale et la double rhétorique du conservatisme et du libéralisme apparaissent comme des invariants de laRihlatout en comptant parmi les éléments génériques intemporels du récit de voyage littéraire.
