"A Sense of Discovery, Mixed with a Sense of Justice": Creating the First Women's Studies Program in Canada

Abstract
The subject of this essay is the intertwining of personal and institutional transformation. In establishing the first credited multi-course women's studies program at the University of British Columbia in Canada, students and faculty challenged not merely an institution's hidebound conservatism. They also confronted resistance to interdisciplinarity, resistance to student activism, maddening bureaucracy, and irrational, often fear-laden responses to the possibility of admitting women to full intellectual and professional equality in the university. The history of this program--like so many others--is thus a history of battles lost and won, and lost again. It is also a story of faculty and students who refused to give up, even when careers were put in jeopardy and frustrations were unending. Finally, it is my personal reminiscence of the best professional experience I have ever known.
