Abstract
Comment l'économie britannique a-t-elle supporté la longue épreuve de presque vingt-deux ans de guerre contre la France révolutionnaire et le conflit a-t-il entravé son développement ? La victoire a couronné l'effort, mais ce ne fut pas sans difficultés graves et, contradictoirement, sans d'importants avantages finalement acquis. Globalement, les pratiques et structures du capitalisme industriel ont nettement progressé. Très marquée par l'éco- nométrie rétrospective à l'échelle nationale, l'historiographie anglaise récente fournit à nos questions des réponses assez précises, quoique discutées. Mais il paraît nécessaire de replacer aussi l'économie dans les cadres généraux de la société et des institutions politiques pour comprendre le sens de l'évolution.
