Abstract
As high school ended, several local universities recruited Doug for football, wrestling, and track. He outlines how one of his incredible life mentors, a teacher, Mr. John Cater, took notice of his skills early in high school and provided his support and guidance to help Doug realize those dreams. He eventually committed to the University of Guelph, where he joined the Gryphon Football family and started a lifelong passion to help those he played with, many young men he mentored and the Gryphon families that supported them. In University, he would meet fellow Gryphon football teammate Dave Lloyd and they formed a lifelong friendship, who with several of Dave’s own childhood friends would become known as the “Barrie Boys”. This group of young men would provide lifelong support to each other in good and bad times as they navigated roles as sons, fathers, husbands, and brothers. The connection lasted over 36 years.
