La notion de « mystère » telle que l’exploitent les auteurs de romans policiers constitue, au-delà du genre lui-même, un objet présentant un intérêt sémiotique certain. Des auteurs comme Agatha Christie ou Arthur Conan Doyle ont par exemple développé dans leurs romans et nouvelles des procédures narratives intégrant parfois un traitement de l’intrigue tout à fait singulier. En effet, de La mystérieuse affaire de Styles au Mystère du Val Boscombe, les deux célèbres auteurs ont proposé un traitement très particulier des indices par leur détective respectif, Hercule Poirot et Sherlock Holmes. Par un jeu subtil sur le raisonnement de type abductif grâce auquel avance l’enquête, l’issue attendue par le lecteur peut à l’occasion s’avérer trompeuse. Ces « échecs » apparents, qui résultent du choix de réserver une autre sanction au criminel – ou même de l’épargner – ne sont en effet possibles que parce que l’abduction guide la construction narrative et l’argumentation logique des auteurs. J’examinerai l’articulation féconde qui régit ce type de combinaison logico-narrative lorsqu’une certaine utilisation des indices conduit, par abduction, à la construction d’une « fausse » résolution du mystère selon que l’on se place d’un point de vue intra ou extradiégétique.
