Résumé Cette étude se propose d’évaluer deux facettes distinctes du soutien maternel : la fréquence des récents comportements de soutien de la mère envers son enfant et ses représentations d’aide à l’égard de cet enfant, au cas où ce dernier se trouverait dans une situation problématique. Il a été tenu compte de l’âge et du sexe de l’enfant ainsi que de la scolarité de la mère et du revenu familial. Cent vingt et une mères (121) d’enfants inscrits dans des écoles primaires de Montréal ont répondu à deux questionnaires. Les mères estiment avoir fourni de l’aide à leur enfant au cours du dernier mois, mais cette aide varie en fonction du type de situation, allant de « pas du tout » à « chaque jour ». L’évaluation des représentations des besoins de soutien de l’enfant montre, en outre, que presque toutes les mères pensent que leur enfant aurait besoin d’une aide spécifique s’il était placé dans une situation jugée par elles comme problématique. L’âge et le sexe de l’enfant, la scolarité de la mère et le revenu familial modulent les résultats en ce qui concerne la quantité de soutien à apporter, le type de soutien et les situations pour lesquelles la mère devrait intervenir.
