Abstract
Current Opinion in Organ Transplantation was launched in 1996. It is part of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of organ transplantation is divided into 18 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Shimon KusneShimon KusneDr Shimon Kusne earned his MD degree in 1975 from University of Bologna, Italy. After early training in internal medicine in Israel, he completed a residency in internal medicine (1981–1984) and a fellowship in infectious diseases (1984–1987) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. During his fellowship, Dr Kusne developed a special interest and research program in the field of infectious disease in solid organ transplant recipients. In 1987, he became Assistant Professor, and in 1994, Associate Professor, in the Departments of Medicine and Surgery, at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the Thomas Starzl Transplantation Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He served there as the Director of Transplant Infectious Diseases until 2003. In 2003, Dr Kusne relocated to Mayo Clinic Arizona, Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Currently, Dr Kusne is Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He served as Chair of the Division of Infectious Diseases, and Director of the Transplant Infectious Disease Program in the Department of Internal Medicine. He is board-certified in internal medicine and in infectious diseases. Dr Kusne has published in numerous medical journals in the field of infectious complications in transplant recipients, he serves as a reviewer for medical journals, and had served as an Associate Editor for the journal Liver Transplantation. His special interests include infection in solid organ transplantation, donor derived infections, coccidioidomycosis in transplant recipients, and infection control and prevention in ventricular assist device recipients. Peter AbramsPeter AbramsPeter Abrams, MD, is Director of Pancreas and Islet Transplantation at MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute in Washington, DC, USA. Following his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital, USA in general surgery, he completed his multi-organ abdominal transplant fellowship at the Thomas E Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. After completing his fellowship in 2011, he joined the abdominal transplant faculty at Allegheny Health Network, Pennsylvania, USA, where he became Director of Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation. He was recruited to Georgetown in 2015. He serves on several national transplant committees, including the OPTN/UNOS Pancreas Transplantation Committee and the Membership and Workforce Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. Stanislaw StepkowskiStanislaw StepkowskiAfter receiving a bachelor in veterinary medicine and a PhD in transplant immunology, Warsaw, Poland, Dr Stepkowski completed his postdoctoral training in Oslo, Norway (Radium Hospital) and Halifax, Canada (Dalhousie University). He was appointed an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas, United States. In 1997, he received a Doctor of Science degree at the Polish Academy of Science in Wroclaw, Poland, for his contribution in the basic pre-clinical development of rapamycin as an immunosuppressive agent. His major contribution is identifying a potent synergistic interaction with cyclosporine leading to successful clinical trials. In search of non-nephrotoxic immunosuppressive modalities, he developed antisense oligonucleotides for immunosuppression and novel Janus tyrosine kinase (Jak)3 agents. While working in research he completed tissue typing clinical training to work in kidney paired donation program. He is now a Professor of Immunology and Surgery at the University of Toledo College of Medicine in Toledo, Ohio, United States. Since 1987, he had continuous support from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and other resources. He is an editor for several professional journals and he has served on several advisory committees at NIH.
